7 tips for creating the perfect open plan kitchen
At Twenty 5 Design, we like to be, somewhat different. A little bit out of the ordinary so to speak with the aim of creating something really special. According to research carried out by Houzz, we spend a lot of time in our kitchens. That’s 2.8 hours a day if we’re going to be specific. So considering this is 12% of our entire lifetime, surely the humble kitchen should be no less than spectacular?
Bringing everyone together and improving the overall appearance of your property, an open plan kitchen is the perfect addition to any modern family home. Here’s how you can carry out this growing living trend.
Think about the layout
When it comes to the layout of your new open plan kitchen, it’s time to think outside of the box. At Twenty 5 Design, we’re very good at doing so, along with overseeing and ensuring a smooth renovation process. Large square or rectangular rooms work really well with thoughtfully zoned whereas an L-shaped open plan kitchen is a great alternative and handy for sectioning off the dining and cooking areas.
Give thought to functionality
This modern open plan living trend comes with many advantages. One is that you can keep an eye on what the little ones are up to at the same time as rustling up your favourite granary loaf. You don’t, however, want everyone doing things on top of one another, so bear in mind from the outset the areas you intend to keep for eating, cooking and socialising and no-one will get under your feet.
Plan for beautiful lighting
The right lighting really makes an open plan living space. Some would even go so far as to say that the right lighting is at the core of beautiful room design. Consider the different lighting elements that will add layer upon layer to your open plan kitchen. Pendant lights, such as these, make for a stunning focal point and accent lighting can be used to highlight certain features of the room. Also, make sure to allow for natural lighting. For us, there is no better source, than au natural daylight.
Yes, that’s right, your entire living space is now as one so that means no closing the kitchen door when it gets to the fast spin on the washing machine. If you’re lucky enough to have space for a utility room then great. If not don’t worry. Some appliances such as dishwashers actually come with a low decibel rating and others may even have the Quiet Mark approval. For everything else, there’s always soft furnishings that help to dull acoustics.
Consider your design scheme
Now the exciting stuff, putting your stamp on your new open plan kitchen. If you’re a fan of modern minimalism, clean lines and neutral colours will keep your open plan space looking sleek and streamlined. If you’re more of a traditionalist, opt for classic cabinetry in one of this seasons sought after dark woods. Accent colours are also really useful for defining areas and pulling the overall look together.
Take the indoors out
Open plan living goes hand in hand with bi-fold doors that frame the garden beautifully. It makes the garden more accessible and perfect for those spur of the moment, alfresco dinners. Locating your open plan kitchen to the rear of the house is sure to make the best use of the great outdoors.
Enjoy your new open plan kitchen
So there we have it, the best bit saved until last. Now that your renovation is complete, the next step would be to stock up your beautiful new kitchen units and get the champagne on ice. Incredibly practical for entertaining, an open plan kitchen also means that you can still mingle with your guests as you enjoy being the hostess with the mostess. So when your friends and family do come over for the big reveal you’re guaranteed to spark some serious kitchen envy.
